A month back, I posted about the Magic Keyboard in an entry titled Has the Magic Worn Off? In that entry, I laid bare my neurotic dislike of how easily Apple's black keyboard keys stain from typing on them. Shortly after writing the post, I came across the GhostCover for the iPad Pro's Magic Keyboard, and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts using the keyboard protector over the past month.

The GhostCover is a thin (0.005 inch; I didn't measure it, that's what the website told me) piece of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that is moulded to precisely fit over the keys of the Magic Keyboard. The chief properties of TPU are that it's flexible, transparent, and resists abrasion and oil. The cover protects the keys of the magic keyboard from getting stained, prevents dust, dirt, and grime from getting under the keys, and is transparent enough to allow the Magic Keyboard's backlighting to shine through.

One featured the Magic Keyboard has been lauded for has been its phenomenal typing experience. Naturally, I was a bit hesitant to purchase this product if it would make the typing experience so undesirable as to defeat the purpose of typing on the keyboard to begin with. My experience has been that the GhostCover does affect the typing experience to somewhere between the typing experience of a Smart Keyboard Folio & the Magic Keyboard without the GhostCover. To be as technical as possible, it makes the typing experience slightly "mushier," but I think that's to be expected anytime you put a single membrane cover over a keyboard. And there's your tradeoff: less clicky, mushier, but no need to worry about dust and gross oily keys.

For me, the tradeoff was worth it. I don't mind the Smart Keyboard, and my dislike of "a ruined keyboard" (I know that characterization might be a tad much) meant that the benefit was well in favour of the cover. But you're mileage may vary. Fortunately, the cover is only $13 and is removable at any point (you don't need to apply adhesives), so its a low-risk purchase for anyone considering it.
