June saw Apple reopen 234 additional retail stores globally. However, surging cases in the United States and an isolated outbreak of COVID-19 in the UK resulted in Apple closing 33 retail locations in June, with additional closures beginning in July.

This post is the fifth of a multi-entry series covering the Apple Store retail closing and reopening strategy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This entry recaps the month of June 2020.

Entry Series:

June was an incredibly busy month for Apple retail. This month saw Apple reopen all their retail locations in Thailand, Belgium, Spain, UAE, France, Turkey, Netherlands, & Singapore, and finish reopening locations across Japan, Italy, Canada, & Sweden. Apple also significantly increased the number of stores reopening across the United States and began opening up a majority of its retail locations across the UK.

However, as June wore on, it became clear that reopening would not be a 1-way street. As waves of Covid-19 infections spread across the US, Apple announced that nearly 50 previously opened stores would temporarily close. One localized outbreak, in Leicester, would also result in a temporary closure of a store in the surrounding area.

Apple announced that it would be closing 11 previously reopened retail locations due to spikes in COVID cases in those particular jurisdictions. These closures affect stores in four US states & effective tomorrow, June 20, 2020.

Apple’s statement:

“Due to current COVID-19 conditions in some of the communities we serve, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas. We take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible.”

Apple outlined this possibility when it published its relaunch strategy back on May 17, 2020, where Deirdre O’Brien stated:

“Our commitment is to only move forward with a reopening once we’re confident we can safely return to serving customers from our stores. We look at every available piece of data — including local cases, near and long‑term trends, and guidance from national and local health officials. These are not decisions we rush into — and a store opening in no way means that we won't take the preventative step of closing it again should local conditions warrant.”
