July saw Apple continue to close a sizeable portion of its US retail stores in response to growing coronavirus cases across the country. By the end of July, Apple had closed 115 retail locations for a second time across the United States, and 5 in the state of Victoria in Australia.


This post is the sixth of a multi-entry series covering the Apple Store retail closing and reopening strategy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This entry recaps the month of July 2020.

Entry Series:

In mid-June, Apple began closing retail locations a second time as the Coronavirus ripped across the United States. In July, Apple closed an additional 68 US retail stores in addition to the 47 it closed throughout June, for a total of 115 by July 31, 2020. Apple also closed five stores in Australia, due to an outbreak in the area. Lastly, Apple was able to reopen the last three retail locations across the UK.


July 01, 2020

Following an influx of COVID-19 cases near the Melbourne area, Apple announced that it would be temporarily closing one retail location, Apple Highpoint, on July 02, 2020. This is the first store in Australia to temporarily close again due to the virus's resurgence in the area. Other locations in the Australian State of Victoria remain open but with reduced service, providing pickup of online orders and appointment-only Genius Support.

Apple announced its fourth wave of COVID-19 related closures in the United States following an influx of cases across parts of the country. Following the 16 additional closures announced on June 30, effective July 02, 30 other retail locations will temporarily close, with stores remaining open until July 03 to service any remaining Genius Support appointments and existing online orders. Two of these locations - Apple Century City & Apple The Grove - had only just reopened back on June 22, 2020.

In Pittsburgh, Apple South Hills Village has temporarily closed, with a reopening date listed for Thursday, July 09.

July 07, 2020

Apple is reopening two locations - Apple Carnegie Library in D.C. and Apple Walnut Stress in Philadelphia - on July 8, 2020. Both of these locations were never part of any reopening wave, but were damaged during protests and required additional time to facilitate repairs.

Apple also announced that two locations in the United States - Apple Augusta in Augusta, Georgia & Apple Fashion Fair in Fresno, California - will close on July 8 due to increased COVID infection rates reported in the area. Apple Augusta is the last Apple store in Georgia to close following a wave of closures on July 02, 2020, that closed all other locations.

Following a spike of COVID-19 cases in the area, the entire state of Victoria is imposing new lockdown measures expected to be in effect for the next six weeks. These new measures mean that four more Apple stores in the state - which had initially reduced their scope of service to web pickups & appointment-only Genius Support - will temporarily close.

Apple Retail stores have launched a service where customers may book a 15/30-minute window for one-on-one help purchasing products at their retail locations. This new service contains in-store browsing and gives customers a dedicated window of time to talk to an associate, have their questions answered, and make purchases without needing to wait in line.


July 09, 2020

Apple announced the closure of 11 additional locations across California, Ohio, and Tennessee in response to increasing cases of COVID-19 effective July 10, 2020. Stores will remain open until the 12th to facilitate any existing online orders and Genius Support appointments. That brings the number of stores in the United States that have had close a second time to 91.

With the Scottish government allowing malls to reopen as of July 13, Apple can open the final two Apple Stores, which have remained closed in the UK since March. These are the last two Apple Stores in the country to reopen, although Apple Highcross remains temporarily closed due to a local outbreak in the area.

Apple Vintage Faire closed on July 10, 2020, and has a re-reopening date scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2020. The reason why this store had closed for this period are not known.


July 11, 2020

Apple announced that another store - Apple Bridge Street in Huntsville, Alabama - is the latest store to be closed due to increasing COVID-19 cases across the United States. The store will be closed starting July 12, 2020, with limited access for any web orders or Genius Support appointments through July 14, 2020.

Apple announced the closure of eight more retail locations across the United States related to increases in COVID-19 cases effective July 15, 2020. States, where the closures are occurring, are Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Virginia, & Wisconsin. Additionally, six locations across California, while they have not yet closed, have reduced to only providing curbside service for store pickups and scheduled Genius Support appointments. Just over 50% of Appleโ€™s 53 locations in California remain open, and over 100 retail locations across the United States have had to close a second time in recent weeks due to the spread of COVID-19.

Despite closing two locations in the state on July 15, Apple Reston in Virginia reopened today. Apple also opened one retail location in Modesto, California - Apple Vintage Faire - after it had temporarily closed a week earlier.


July 17, 2020

Apple announced the closure of three more store locations across the United States on Friday. Effective July 18, Apple is closing the last of its retail locations in North Carolina & its sole store in Arkansas to increase COVID-19 cases across the country. Apple is also closing Apple Vintage Faire in Modesto once again, which had reopened only two days prior, on July 16, 2020. All three stores will remain open for pickups and Genius Appointments through July 20, 2020.

Missouri has now seen the closure of all of the states Apple Stores, and in Ohio, only stores in Akron & Beavercreek remain open.

According to @MichaelStreeber, with the closure of Appleโ€™s Alaska retail location, all five of Appleโ€™s retail locations that were the first to reopen in May have closed again due to the spread of COVID-19.
